1985 | LOS ANGELES COUNTY MUSEUM

Los Angeles, California

This passageway was one of a series of ‘interior additions’ completed in the mid-eighties.  The aim is to draw out the implications or content inherent in the often utilitarian structures, such as windows, doors, entryways and room dividers, thereby changing the experience of an interior space.  These projects pursue ways of making people take note of their surroundings at an intimate scale, whether it is passing through a doorway or looking out a window. At the entrance to the exhibition, the simple act of passing through a wall from one room to another is elaborated upon in a tunnel-like opening made up of a series of cutout circles. Moving through the repeated layers extends the sense of passage – entrance is no longer taken for granted.
